Our Story

We discovered Welgevonden, once farmland, now restored into a unique private game reserve. When we came across Mhondoro, something clicked instantly. We took the leap and made it ours. Gradually renovating and shaping it into what it would become.

Just as the renovation was completed, an electrical fire destroyed the entire main lodge. Our hearts broke. Thankfully, no one was hurt. We made the decision to rebuild.

We reopened with a reimagined vision. A larger main lodge, a unique underground tunnel leading to our wildlife hide, and a private villa for those seeking complete seclusion. Mhondoro was reborn.

We acquired the farm “Vijgenboom” and created a space for something new. The Farmhouse Project was born, an initiative to empower local people, create opportunities and develop products rooted in the region.

We began our overland journey, taking our first guests into the wilds of Botswana. Guided by our own Mhondoro team, guests felt at home and completely at ease. Our fully equipped overland vehicle ensured that every detail was taken care of, creating truly unforgettable adventures.

We opened the doors to our newly built reception at Platbank. A refined space where guests can refresh after a long journey or before travelling home, while enjoying a lunch prepared with ingredients from our own land. A glimpse behind the scenes, where even the gardens are open to explore, with a small shop offering handcrafted products and farm-made delicacies to take home.

We recently acquired The Southern Residence, a luxury lodge in the southern part of Welgevonden, available exclusively for private use. Overlooking the vast Sterkstroom Valley, it offers a perspective that reminds you how small you are in the grandeur of nature.
