Elephant and Giraffe

Last week, we were treated to some truly spectacular wildlife sightings in the western part of the reserve, particularly at Andre’s Pan. During the day, we set out to find the elephants that frequent this area, but they were nowhere to be seen. As the sun began to set, and after enjoying a sundowner stop, we decided it was time to head back to the lodge as the air grew colder.

A Full Moon Encounter with Giants

On our way back, we encountered an unexpected and awe-inspiring sight—a massive elephant bull walking down the road towards us. We quickly pulled off the road, giving this giant the space to pass. Under the light of a full moon, we soon realized he wasn’t alone. Seconds later, about 40 elephants appeared, silently moving past us. No pictures were taken, respecting the elephants’ sensitivity to light, but the experience was nothing short of magical. Witnessing these gentle giants in the moonlight was an unforgettable moment, one that words alone can’t fully capture.

Giraffe Sparring and Other Daytime Adventures

Earlier that same day, we came across a journey of giraffes, calmly browsing on vegetation close to our vehicle. Among them, two young bulls were engaged in a battle of strength, fighting to establish their own territories. This behavior, known as “necking” or “sparring,” involved the giraffes wrestling with each other. Occasionally, one would lose balance, resulting in a heavy blow to the side of the rib cage, producing a loud sound that echoed across the plains.

Our day also included a sighting of a dazzle of zebras and a huge troop of baboons on the hunt for their favorite food—scorpions. Watching the baboons lift rocks in search of their prey is always fascinating, but sometimes they get more than they bargained for. If a snake is uncovered instead, the scene quickly turns into a loud and chaotic screaming match, which can be quite amusing to witness!

A Day and Night to Remember

From the peaceful sight of giraffes sparring to the thrilling full moon encounter with a herd of elephants, last week’s safari offered a perfect blend of excitement and tranquility. Every moment spent in the reserve reminds us of the beauty and unpredictability of nature, and we can’t wait to see what the bush will reveal next.
