When going on safari for the first time, it’s easy to feel a bit baffled as you stare into your empty bag, wondering what you need to pack to ensure full enjoyment while staying comfortable at the same time.
Safari Clothing Basics: What to Wear
First-time safari adventurers don’t need to buy a full wardrobe of khaki clothing to look like Sir David Livingstone. To be honest, while on a safari vehicle, you can wear any colors. However, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to do a bush walk, it’s a good idea to pack a comfortable pair of pants and a top in neutral colors, as well as comfy, closed walking shoes.
Winter mornings can be very chilly in the bush, so be sure to pack warm clothes, including a beanie, scarf, and gloves if you like. For summer, also bring a warm jacket, as it can still get cool in the evenings. One item that’s important all year round is a hat to protect you from the relentless African sun. Sunblock and bug spray are also highly recommended.
Essential Equipment: Capturing Your Safari Memories
Now, onto the equipment side of things—a camera is a must to capture the unforgettable memories of your African safari! Binoculars are a great bonus for spotting elusive leopards or a beautiful African paradise flycatcher hunting insects in the fig trees above. A fun tip: you can flip binoculars around and use them as a magnifying glass to examine the intricate features of butterflies and other invertebrates! If you have a GoPro, you can mount it on the front of the safari vehicle to capture some incredible footage of animals walking past. However, if you don’t have a camera or binoculars, your phone camera will do just fine!
Going Digital: Safari Apps to Enhance Your Experience
In today’s digital age, there’s an app for almost everything—including safaris. If you’re a keen birder, I recommend downloading the Robert’s Birds of Southern Africa app. For mammals, the Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa is a fantastic resource. These apps will help you learn more about the birds and animals you spot. Additionally, there are a number of stargazing apps that guide you in pinpointing constellations in the dark African night skies.
Ready for Adventure?
And with that, you’re set to go! Your first safari adventure awaits—packed and prepared for an unforgettable experience.
