Löwenfährte

On this particular afternoon, our game drive began with an agreed plan among the rangers to locate the buffalo up north in the reserve. However, in the back of our minds, we were also hoping to spot the elusive male lion that we had been eager to show our guests. With this in mind, we decided to take our rifles along, ready to follow his tracks on foot if we came across any signs of the king of the jungle.

The Search Begins: A Change of Plans

As we reached Fig Tree Plains, we had a choice: continue straight toward the buffalo area, about 40 minutes away, or take a short left to the airstrip. At that precise moment, another ranger reported over the radio that the male lion had been seen crossing the airstrip. Without a word, we turned around like synchronized ‘Super Rangers,’ ready to embark on the greatest male lion ‘hunt’ ever witnessed at Mhondoro.

The Chase Heats Up

Just as we reached the airstrip, the disappointing news came over the radio—the visual of the lion had been lost. Refusing to accept defeat, my ranger colleague and I disembarked from the vehicle, rifles in hand, determined to find the male lion that had eluded us.

A Successful Mission

After walking for about 30 minutes without success, we decided to return to the vehicles and head north, following the route we believed the lion might be taking. Moving quickly, we soon picked up his tracks on the other side of the plains. Then, something caught my eye—a distinct figure moving through the bush. There he was, walking along the ridge line towards the road. All we had to do was sit quietly and watch as this magnificent beast of a male lion calmly walked straight past our vehicle.

I would call that a successful mission accomplished!
